Sigh L We hope that people can stay away from their computers while staying in Paris however we completely understand that people need to stay connected with their friends, families and businesses. Besides the internet cafes noted elsewhere in this guide, you can connect to the internet using the phone line or through our Home Gateway/DSL modem (device to the right of the printer which has the words “Netgear” which provides high speed access. You can connect to it via WiFi or Ethernet with either your laptop or our Apple iBook.

Power
If you look under the left side
of the desk there is a multi-plug outlet with US adapters that you can
use so you can minimize the wires on the floor. Also, inside the desk is a multi-plug outlet
and US adapters. that you can plug
into the outlet below the desk. Make
sure you laptop power block accepts 220V electricity!! To reset the whole Home Gateway broadband
system, there is a power strip with a switch under the right hand side
of the
desk.
Connecting to the Internet
By modem (phone line)
On the desk there is a phone line
that you can connect to your laptop modem. Most likely your Internet Service Provider
(e.g. AOL) has provided you with a local phone number that either starts
with
“01” or “08”. Contrary to typical US
phone systems, remember that there is a charge per minute for all calls in France
even “08” numbers. Any questions, please
email us at rentals@elzevir.net.
By DSL using an Ethernet cable
Most likely if you
are reading this, you’ve probably connected via your Ethernet port before. If not, the challenge of explaining this
in a few words is high and we would not want to make your computer unusable. So please do this if you’ve done this before
or you can accept the potential risk.
On the desk is an
Ethernet cable which is connected to the Netgear Home Gateway. You can tell the difference the Ethernet
and the phone cable because the Ethernet cable is fatter. The wire can extend and retract by pulling
BOTH ends of the retractable cable. Plug
the Ethernet cable into your laptop Ethernet port. Most likely you should reboot your computer
unless you are an expert on releasing and reacquiring an IP address or you
have relatively new operating system (e.g XP or OS X). Most computers have a little light near their Ethernet port and
this should be on when you are connected to the modem. If it doesn’t, you probably won’t be able
to go much further. Your Ethernet
(TCP/IP) configuration should be such that you are using DHCP (obtaining
an Ethernet address automatically). If
this all sounds all too foreign to you, then you might want to stick with
using the modem. Any questions, please
email us at rentals@elzevir.net. The local IP address for the home gateway
is 192.168.0.1
By DSL using wireless (Wi-Fi / 802.11b)
Again, most likely
if you are reading this you’ve connected to a wireless network before in
a coffee shop, at an airport, at home or at work. If this is your first time, it is challenging to explain this
in a few words. In your computer
system, you should setup a separate configuration by using your wireless
networking tool. In it, you should
enter the following information:
SSID: ELZEVIRAPT
WEP key: CA7500CD9411CB9450AA13717F
Some systems have
auto-search tools which make this even easier.
To enter the WEP
(security) key characters, please choose the option for hexadecimal and 128
bit. Enter the above WEP key For Apple systems that have an Airport or
Airport Extreme card, you should see the above network (SSID) name (ELZEVIRAPT)
in the Airport utility where the WiFi signal is displayed. Choose WEP 40/128-bit hex for Wireless Security
and enter the WEP key shown above.
Most likely you should
reboot your computer unless you are an expert on releasing and reacquiring
an IP address or you have relatively new operating system (e.g XP or OS X). Most computers have a little light near their
Ethernet port and this should be on when you are connected to the modem. If
it doesn’t, you probably won’t be able to go much further. Your
Ethernet (TCP/IP) configuration should be such that you are using DHCP (obtaining
an Ethernet address automatically). If this all sounds all too foreign to you, then you might want
to stick with using the modem. Any
questions, please email us at rentals@elzevir.net. The local IP address for the home gateway
is 192.168.0.1 If this fails, go
back to the Ethernet cable.
Ink-jet
Printer/Fax/Copier
To the left of the
desk is an HP 4215 Officejet Printer/Fax/Copier. In the drawer on the left-side, there should be a few spare inkjet
cartridges along with CDs that contain software. In the bookcase, there is manual in the white
plastic boxes near the bottom. If
you don’t have a CD-ROM reader, you may need to go to the http://www.hp.com site and obtain the driver for
the 4215 printer. To use the printer
you must have a USB port on your laptop.
1)
Connect the USB cable to your laptop. It may already be attached to the iBook. Typically
the cable is wrapped up nicely behind the printer.
2)
Turn on the printer by pushing the button
on the top labeled “Activate”
3)
Fold open the front completely as seen in
the photo and add paper from the bedroom closet
4)
Make sure the cartridge is not empty (normally,
there is usually extra cartridges in the drawer). To change the cartridge open the little door
on the front right of the printer. More
cartridges (cartouche en francais) can be purchased at the BHV.
5)
If your computer does not automatically recognize
the printer, you can either install the driver from the CD in the desk drawer
or go to the HP web site and download the driver for the HP Officejet 4215.
Please return the
printers, manuals, etc. to the bookcase when you leave the apartment. The manuals include information on cartridge
replacement, etc.
To use the fax or
copier capabilities, lift the front of the printer to access the advanced
features. To use the fax, make sure
the phone line is connected (sometimes clients disconnect it). Choose telecopie and enter number. Please consult the manual to answer any questions. For
the copier capabilities, insert the sheet of paper to be copied in the same
place you would place a document to fax and press copy.
Apple iBook

The newest addition
to the apartment is the little Apple iBook with wireless WiFi access. The system has been setup to only allow
a restricted set of applications including web browsing, writing simple documents,
printing, etc. We’re hoping we don’t
have to do a lot of remote diagnostics from California and don’t want to
allow installation of new programs, etc.
In most cases, it
should be in “sleep” mode and you should be able to just open the top (if
it isn’t open already) and move your finger across the mouse area. If that doesn’t work, press the circular
“on” button at the upper-right of the keyboard. It might take five minutes to start. If needed, choose the user “Elzevir” and the password of “elzevir”. The
system should start up and launch Microsoft Internet Explorer by itself. We’ve included a few shortcuts to websites that might help you
while in Paris. Most internet providers
have their own webmail system but if your provider does not, you can use
the favorite “mail2web”. For those
unfamiliar with Apple systems, hopefully it’ll be easy for you to figure
out. The “dock bar” on the bottom
is what you use to start various applications by moving the cursor over it
and clicking on it.
When not in use,
just close the top and it should go into sleep mode. Though we aren’t a 24/7/365 service center, you can send a note
to rentals@elzevir.net if you have
any questions and/or difficulties. Our
property manager is not very computer savvy, so please don’t call him as
he probably can’t help.
You are welcome to
wander around the apartment with the iBook but please do not take it from
the apartment. When departing,
please leave it on the desk plugged-in.
